Outline of sci.techniques.microscopy

1. Introduction.

This document announces the existence of a microscopy newsgroup on the Usenet called sci.techniques.microscopy. This document is intended to be a regular posting to various related newsgroups to raise awareness of its existence.

This document may also be accessed via the Microbeam Analysis Society Web Server at

URL=http://microanalysis.org/

The main aim of sci.techniques.microscopy is to provide an open, easily accessible, electronic conferencing system or bulletin board for the crystallographic community on the Internet. The newsgroups (in theory) allow queries and discussion to take place in days to weeks, that would take months to years (or not at all) on conventional paper journals. Opportunities for informal discussion and exchange of information and opinions that might only occur at international conferences can routinely take place on the Internet newsgroups.

Participants are welcome and encouraged to browse, read, follow-on, post, and use this newsgroup as an information server, discussion area and electronic conferencing system to its maximum advantage. Being an unmoderated newsgroup, no one owns or runs this newsgroup so. Thus participants should feel uninhibited to freely use this crystallographic discussion forum.

2. Etiquette.

It is requested that, in light of the very broad range of subtopics in microscopy, posts to this newsgroup be submitted with a subject heading that at least contains the area of microscopy discussed in the post. For example:

Subject: TEM: Which TEM film to use? Which is the best?

The use of common acronyms is encouraged to promote brevity (see the list in the Charter section below).

3. Charter.

The main aim of sci.techniques.microscopy is to provide an open forum for the discussion of microscopy and related fields on the Internet. The newsgroups allow he rapid and timely discussion of opinions and information that would take months or years (or not at all) on conventional paper journals. This newsgroup will eventually be linked with the microscopy@anlemc.msd.anl.gov mailing list and archived at the same site. Technical suggestions as to the best way to accomplish this are welcome, and may be directed to either John F. Mansfield or Nestor J. Zaluzec via their respective E-mail addresses below.

John.F.Mansfield@umich.edu

Zaluzec@aaem.amc.anl.gov.

Please note that this proposed newsgroup is intended to be an open forum for discussion of microscopy. Thus relevant topics for this newsgroup should only be limited to what the participants in this proposed newsgroup regard as microscopy.
